Welcome to Finding the Funny, a creative writing class that introduces you into the weird and quirky world of standup comedy. In this class you will learn different writing techniques and exercises for generating your own standup material. The end goal is to have a 3-5 minute set to perform at the end of term cabaret.

The class provides a safe and supportive environment to share and develop material, notes and ideas. You will learn about creating an onstage presence, how to structure and perform your material, as well as various aspects of honing your standup comedy skills.

We will study many notable standup comedians and review their style and techniques. You will also learn about local performance opportunities and how to become involved in the Winnipeg standup comedy scene.

Finding Funny really helps you pinpoint your specific comedy writing style and boosts confidence. Taught by the experienced and hilarious Cara Lytwyn you can’t go wrong here. If you’re passionate about standup comedy and want to really get into it, Finding Funny is definitely for you.

About the instructor:
Cara Lytwyn, originally from Flin Flon, Manitoba, was first introduced to her love of comedy by forcing her family to watch her perform skits from Saturday Night Live. She first performed in the Winnipeg Comedy Festival in 2010’s Shock of the New Show, and 2016 marked her fifth WCF performance.

Lytwyn is the 2008 winner of Winnipeg’s Funniest Person with a Day Job, an annual stand-up comedy contest held at Rumor’s Comedy Club and is the first winner of Winnipeg’s Funniest Comic competition. Her comedy is populated with quick wit, fresh attitude and dynamic energy. She has been reviewed as “Furiously Funny” by UMFM Radio.

For the last five years, she has been invited to perform in the celebrated Winnipeg cabaret: Girls! Girls! Girls!, featuring a variety of talented female artists and she was selected to perform in Winnipeg’s 2010 Just for Laughs Showcase. Cara’s featured episode in the televised comedy series She Kills Me, premiered in January 2014 on APTN. She lives in Winnipeg, Manitoba with her imaginary baby named ‘Plenty of Naps and Wine’.
